The Pizza as a Service Analogy

Understanding cloud models is easiest when compared to eating pizza.

1. On-Premises (Made at Home)

You buy the ingredients, the oven, the gas, the dining table, and you do the cooking and the cleaning. You manage everything.

2. IaaS: Infrastructure as a Service (Take and Bake)

The grocery store provides the pre-made pizza. You still have to use your own oven, gas, and table to cook and eat it. Example: Renting a raw virtual machine on AWS.

3. PaaS: Platform as a Service (Pizza Delivery)

The pizza place makes it and cooks it for you. You just provide the dining table and the drinks. Example: A platform where developers just upload their code, and the cloud handles the servers.

4. SaaS: Software as a Service (Dine-in Restaurant)

You show up at the restaurant. They provide the pizza, the oven, the table, the drinks, and do the cleaning. You just consume the service. Example: Gmail or Netflix.
