Authentication vs. Authorization

The Difference is Crucial

These two terms sound similar but represent two completely different steps in security (often referred to together as IAM: Identity and Access Management).

Authentication (Who are you?)

Authentication is the process of verifying your identity.

  • Analogy: Showing your passport at border control.
  • Examples: Entering a password, scanning your fingerprint, or using an MFA app on your phone.

Authorization (What are you allowed to do?)

Once the system knows who you are, it must decide what you are allowed to access.

  • Analogy: After passing border control, your visa dictates whether you can work, study, or just travel as a tourist.
  • Examples: A standard employee can only view their own paystub, while the HR manager is authorized to view everyone’s paystubs.

A secure system requires both strong authentication (like MFA) and strict authorization (like the Principle of Least Privilege).
