Have I Been Pwned

Updated: Recently

Overview

Created by renowned security researcher Troy Hunt, Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) is a massive database containing billions of leaked accounts from past hacks (like the MySpace, LinkedIn, or Adobe data breaches). It allows anyone to securely check if their personal information is floating around the dark web.

Why It Matters

Hackers use automated bots to test leaked email/password combinations across thousands of websites. If your email is in a breach, and you reused that password on your bank account, the hacker will gain access to your bank. HIBP is the fastest way to know if you are in danger.

How to Use It

  1. Go to the website and type in your email address.
  2. If the screen turns green, you are safe!
  3. If the screen turns red, it will list the exact companies that lost your data. You must immediately log into those websites, change your password, and ensure you are not using that same password anywhere else.
